Overview
During 1930’s, a 7 year old Oei Ek Tjhong, full of hope, landed in Makassar from mainland China. By the mid 20th century, when Indonesia had just set out on the road to gaining independence from the foreign rule, the young Oei had grown up to be known as Eka Tjipta Widjaja.
During the 1950’s, Eka Tjipta embarked on his vision with a humble beginning by starting a small trading company in Makassar, Indonesia which traded in palm oil and other commodities. Later on he entered into the field of production of cooking oil. During his initial days, Eka Tjipta experienced various challenges, developed his business network and most importantly, gained support and credibility from his fellow businessmen. The initial investment of trust, and not money, helped him to grow his business even in difficult times. Sheer hard work and perseverance helped him in growing a diversified business with a multinational outlook that has now come to be known as Sinar Mas.
Sinar Mas focuses on certain essential commodities that also help in nation building and the economic growth of the country. The experience in palm oil trading prompted the start of agribusiness and food. Growth opportunities in the pulp and paper sector prompted the venture into the paper industry in 1974. Banking and finance which helped in handling financial instruments for a growing business, as well as housing and property was a logical extension to strengthen the belief.
