The business climate in Indonesia was growing and needed support of financial instruments to be able to compete with businesses overseas. Sinar Mas realized early that other than being a potential profitable business, the number of banks in Indonesia compared to the population of the country was relatively small. This presented an opportunity and made it imperative to enter the banking and finance.
The interests into banking started with the acquisition of a small bank in 1982. Sinar Mas gradually built up the assets and later branched into providing various services. Over a period of time, leasing, factoring, consumer finance and insurance facilities were added on for the benefit of the customers. Today Sinar Mas offers a basket of services that include the regular banking products and also Capital Market and Multi Financing facilities. The main idea behind extending the product range was to ensure that the customer remains loyal to the company rather than looking elsewhere for certain facilities that were not provided by Sinar Mas.
After the financial crisis in Indonesia, Sinar Mas had to divest this banking venture but continued serving its customers with the development of Bank Sinar Mas.
