The interests into banking started with the acquisition of a small bank in 1982. Sinar Mas gradually built up the assets and later branched into providing various services. The main idea behind extending the product range was to ensure that the customer remains loyal to the company rather than looking elsewhere for certain facilities that were not provided by Sinar Mas.
After the financial crisis in Indonesia, Sinar Mas had to divest this banking venture but continued serving its customers with the development of Bank Sinar Mas.
