Overview
The corporate social responsibility activities of Sinar Mas companies cover many areas, from education to health, environment and livelihoods, women-children welfare and uplifting the socio-economic condition of the community in a sustainable manner
There is a deep rooted commitment to corporate social responsibility at all levels of the organizational structure within the various operating companies and are regularly involved in various programs and initiatives that support collective causes. CSR is a voluntary corporate initiative, as an alternative to additional or existing mandatory regulations. Sinar Mas is well on its way to move from Community Development to CSR which is more sustainable in the long run and brings bigger benefits to the stakeholders.
While looking for sustainable solutions, CSR also develops the entrepreneurship skills of the community and takes into account the expectations of the stakeholders. Sinar Mas is working towards achieving ISO 26000 guidance on Social Responsibility and various changes and initiatives have been implemented within the companies. These initiatives are shared with all the units so that there is a common perception about the philosophy of CSR which is truthful, credible, and responsible towards the work, family and the society.
Under the Tjipta Sarjana Bangun Desa scheme, deserving and needy students are provided with scholarships, and facilities like school buildings and laboratories are constructed in line with Eka Tjipta’s vision of nation building. Training and financial help is provided to the community to carry out various activities that helps in improving their living and brings about a sense of community livelihood.

The essence of Good Corporate Governance (GCG) is simple: sustainable operations which are transparent, accountable, responsible and fair. GCG is related to taking effective decisions which come from the ethics, values and the business process systems.
It is an important aspect of the operations which in the long run will provide added value in realizing the vision and mission of Sinar Mas. Government rules and regulations provide the guidelines for business, which are supported by the appointment of Independent Commissioners in each operating company.
Good corporate governance is key to the integrity of corporations, and helps the company in becoming more accountable and transparent in the business process.

We place a special emphasis on environmental and ecological issues with special efforts to preserve and regenerate the environment. A focus area, in this context, is creating awareness about climate change and ways to mitigate it by planting more trees
Sinar Mas has always striven to be responsible and sensitive on ecological and environmental matters. All operating companies are committed to comply with all regulations on preservation of the environment around its operations. By constantly upgrading the technologies and by applying the best of sustainable processes and practices, we attempt to give environmental issues the priority they deserve.
We are committed to constantly improving our performance on the prevention of pollution, the proper use of natural resources and the minimization of any hazardous impact stemming from the production, development, use and disposal of any of our products and services. We continuously train our employees and create awareness among our suppliers, contractors, customers, stakeholders, and the community at large through a process of participatory dialogue and collaboration.
Climate change is a phenomenon that all businesses are facing everyday. All of our operations follow the process of preservation and regeneration of the environment as an important aspect of its culture of corporate sustainability. As a long term objective of producing carbon neutral paper, the pulp and paper division is working together with Environmental Resources Management (ERM), one of the world’s leading providers of environmental and health & safety consulting services. Together with the fiber suppliers, the units protect, conserve and restore the natural resources, often far beyond what is mandated by government and other institutional policies. In line with the commitment, together with all the business units and partners we have planted millions of trees in various parts of Indonesia. Environmental sustainability has become a fundamental guiding principle in achieving sustainable raw materials for the pulp & paper and also the palm oil operations. The commitment has materialized in a series of programs such as adopting zero burn technique in land clearing and applying cleaner production program in conjunction with zero waste policy since 1996. Participation in the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) has added a new dimension of social, economic and environmental sustainability.
Even from the early days, Sinar Mas operations have given special attention towards global warming and ways of reducing it. This has been demonstrated by the initiation of carbon and socio footprint assessment which was the first of its kind in the world by a pulp and paper producer. Awareness towards effects of global warming and how to conserve, reduce, reuse and recycle is socialized regularly with all employees. Public and employees’ awareness is also increased by the production and distribution of school notebooks which have messages on global warming, on the cover, explained in an easy manner by caricature illustrations.
